Hello Everyone! We are excited to be a participating charity again this year at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Join us on October 14, 2012 for the Scotiabank Charity Challenge, run a 5km, half or full marathon in support of The Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf — Deaf Culture Centre!!
Why go the distance with the Deaf Culture Centre?
We are raising money for ASLphabet.com where last year we raised $6,000. This year our goal is set to $15,000! The generous donations last year allowed us to work on the comprehensive children's dictionary structure which we launched in April 2012!!
This is the year to run or walk with the Deaf Culture Centre to help expand the online ASL dictionary to 1500 signs! The comprehensive dictionary allows children to look up words in their first language and provides them with a definition and a translation. Deaf children are better able to develop self-confidence by discovering the meaning of unfamiliar signs without having to ask for help.
The dictionary is also helpful for hearing parents of Deaf children. Most people do not realize that 90 per cent of Deaf Children are born into hearing families. You would be helping Deaf children have an incredible access to their first language. Have a look here to see the work in progress of this incredible Animated ASL Dictionary: www.aslphabet.com. If you are running, or have thought about running in the Waterfront Marathon and participating in the Charity Challenge, we’d love to have you run with us whether you’re running a marathon, half marathon or the 5k run/walk.
